Eye Health

A check of your eye health is part of every eye exam. Some of the more common problems are illustrated below. This website is NOT a substitute for professional advice.

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the lens inside the eye becomes unclear. This is part of the ageing process, but may also be caused by disease, some drugs (both prescription and non prescription), injuries and inherited problems. In any case, the cure is usually an operation where the lens is removed and replaced with a plastic one. This is done by an Ophthalmologist (eye specialist) and is a quick, relatively painless operation with a very high success rate.

Glaucoma

There are many forms of Glaucoma, but the loss of sight is caused by damage to the optic nerve.

Chronic Open Angle Glaucoma, the sneak thief of sight usually has no symptoms. You lose vision from the outside in as a result of slowly increasing pressure in the eye. Eye specialists usually treat this with drops.

Acute Closed angle glaucoma is a painful, sudden loss of vision in an eye. This usually gets better, but attacks become more frequent over time. This is usually cured with a laser.

Low Tension Glaucoma is similar in effect to Chronic Open Angle Glaucoma, but the pressure is normal.
